It *is* possible to generate free visitors to your website, but it will cost you time.

Traffic will always cost at least one of two things: TIME or MONEY.

First, you can spend time…

  Writing & submitting Articles

  Running a Blog

  Participating in Forums

  Being active on Social Media

But if you only depend on driving traffic via your own efforts … your income will be strictly limited by the amount of time you can work.

And that’s a recipe for too much work … and not enough income!

Next, you can spend money:

Buying PPC Ads on Google, Yahoo, or MSN

  Purchasing Ezine Ads

  Doing Media Buys

  Paying for Search Engine Optimization

That allows you to reduce the burden on your time … but you still need a bunch of cash!

Keep in mind first and foremost that Internet businesses, like any other business, is sales and marketing based. You have to have something to sell. You need to market and advertise for buyers.

If marketing and selling are not in your blood, you need to move in that direction

Selling on the Internet is not a slam dunk. Even if you have a good product, the competition is fairly stiff. Just look at eBay and everyone trying to sell the same thing.

Recognize the need for something to sell as one of the most basic building blocks of starting an online business. The “something” could be your product, or it could be someone elses that you’ve paid rights for selling it. It could be less tangible services such as website design, scrapbooking or consulting. It could be information that you’re smart on from a hobby or personal experience.

to be continued . . .

I know you’re probably chomping at the bit to get started and don’t want to read thru reams of advice. I know from experience you’ll be coming back for more advice, but the important thing here is to get going, get your feet wet, appreciate what goes into this effort, and develop your discipline and patience.

The last two are going to be what it takes to take your idea and run with it ie. turn it into a website, that eventually makes money for you.

So, where to from here ?

This is as simple as it gets, and what may appeal to you even more, has no out of pocket cost.

Blogging thru Google.com

Like anything else, you will need to “get into it”, learn how it works, and how to do better. But in one big step for mankind and yourself, you’ll be published and more importantly visible, with an opportunity for ads being put on your blog website.

Blogging will provide invaluable experience as you try different things and formats, with no worry about cost consequences or making a mistake. You don’t have to get it totally right or perfect the first time.

(Don’t forget to bookmark or add this website to your favorites ! You’ll want to come back here for more good advice.)

Ready to go ?

Go to google.com and click on ”Sign In”. Once you do that, you will be prompted to create a Google account if you don’t have one.

Log into your new account, and click on “My Account”. Listed under “My services” is “Blogger”, which is what you want to click on.

Right there in the middle of the next screen you should see “Create Your Own Blog Now”. Click on that and you’re on your way.

Help and tutorial resources are at blogger.com which you can access directly, but it’s probably less confusing if you log into your google.com account first (Google bought blogger.com).

(If this is the first time you’ve opened a Google account, you’ll notice a whole new world will open up for you. A free email account and other services. Click “More >>” under “Try something new” on your “My Account” home page, and you will see what I’m talking about ! ! )

Your focus should be on blogging for now. <grin> Don’t get ahead of yourself, but do read “Adsense” under “Try something new”. It will give you a sense of what you’re trying to achieve in the long run with a quality blog that attracts readers and advertising.

One last point before closing out this building block : re-read building block #1 about your main goal of having your own product. In developing your Google blog, focus on your own theme and content quality. That has to come first and will serve you in the long run as you attract readers and advertising to your site.

Patience. Discipline. Hard work. Success.

Once you’ve gotten into the rhythm of blogging at Google, there several paths you can take towards your goal of building a money system. Some people call that “monetizing” your blog or website.

If you’re not ready to branch out on your own with your own domain and hosting, you can move in that direction by signing up for Adsense thru your Google account. That will engage Google to place related or non-related ads on your site for which you get paid when someone clicks on an ad while visiting your site.

To this point, there’s no cost to you, other than your invested time.

Website fundamentals and the building of your money system(s) continue to be :

original quality content,

that is of interest to a niche market,

and that is optimized for search engines and visibility

The monetization can logically follow.

The following is a great framework for any entrepreneur – at any stage of their development. The list contains true words to live by, great tips to improve any business, and a fairly comprehensive checklist for ‘must do’ business practices.

It’s got to be a BIG idea that you, your team and your customers can “get” in seconds.

Strive to create 10x — 100x in value for any price you charge. Your rewards are always proportionate to the value you provide.

You must charge a premium price so you have a large margin to provide an extraordinary value & experience.

Provide a ‘Reason Why’ customers should do business with you and pay you a premium.

Get paid before you deliver your product or service. And when possible figure out how to create recurring revenue from transactions.

You get to make the rules for your business. Don’t let industry norms dictate how you’ll work or who you’ll work with.

Create your business around your life instead of settling for your life around your business.

Consistently and constantly force yourself to focus on the ‘critically few’ proactive activities that produce exponential results. Don’t get caught up in minutia & bullshit.

Seek to minimize start-up risk but have maximum upside potential.

Get your idea out there as fast as possible even if it’s not quite ready by setting must-hit deadlines. Let the market tell you if you have a winner or not. If not — move on and fail forward fast! If it’s got potential — then you can make it better.

Find partners and team members who are strong where you are weak and appreciate being paid on results.

Your reputation always counts. Honor your obligations and agreements.

Never, ever get paid based on hours worked.

Leverage your marketing activities exponentially by using direct response methods and testing.

Measure and track your marketing so you know what’s working and what’s not.

Bootstrap. Having too much capital leads to incredible waste and doing things using conventional means.

Your partners and employees actions are their true core — not what they tell you.

Keep asking the right questions to come up with innovative solutions. “How?”, “What?”, “Where?”, “Who Else?” & “Why?” open up possibilities.

You’ll never have a perfect business and you’ll never be totally “done”. Deal with it.

Focus most of your time on your core strengths and less time working in areas you suck at.

Make it easier for customers to buy by taking away the risk of the transaction by guaranteeing what you do in a meaningful way.

Always have something else to sell (via upsell, cross-sell, follow-up offer, etc) whenever a transaction takes place. The hottest buyer in the world is one who just gave you money.

Always go back to your existing customers with exceptional offers and reasons they should give you more money. It’s 5x less expensive to sell to happy customers than go find new ones.

However the flip side is – fire your most annoying customers. They’ll be replaced with the right ones.

The marketplace and competitors are always trying to beat you down to a commodity. Don’t let that happen.

Develop and build your business’s personality that stands out. People want to buy from people.

Create your own category so you can be first in the consumer’s mind.

Go the opposite direction competitors are headed — you’ll stand out.

Mastermind and collaborate with other smart entrepreneurs if they have futures that are even bigger than their present.

Celebrate your victories. It’s too easy to simply move on to your next goal without acknowledging and appreciating the ‘win’.

Make your business AND doing business with you FUN!

Do the unexpected before and after anything goes wrong so customers are compelled to ‘share your story’.

Get a life! Business and making money are important but your life is the sum total of your experiences. Go out and create experiences & adventures so you can come back renewed and inspired for your next big thing.

Give back! Commit to taking a % of your company’s sales and make a difference. If this becomes a habit like brushing your teeth pretty soon the big checks with lots of zeros won’t be scary to write. If you think you can’t donate a percentage of your sales simply raise your price.

In the past, creating good, unique and newsworthy content, coupled with intelligent onsite optimization strategies, was at least enough to get your website found. These days are now gone, regardless of what some naïve or misleading SEO experts might still tell you.

Page Rank has now become the single most important factor in having your site found in the organic search results of the leading search engines. Page Rank is determined by the quantity and quality of websites that are linking to yours. Each website link acts as a kind of vote for the site it links to, and passes some of its own page rank to this site. The higher the page rank, and the more relevant the content of the site, the more significant the affect will be.

Since search engine bots cannot view your site in the same way a human views it, this strategy allows user popularity to have a significant affect on the algorithm these search engines are using. The belief is, of course, that the more quality and relevant sites that are voting for yours, the higher the probability that your site is a good one, and therefore deserving of a higher position.

Of course, this system is not perfect, and for obvious reasons, but it is certainly superior to deciding the importance of a site purely on onsite content. The reality is, there are thousands if not million of webmasters who can write unique, quality content. There are even more who know how to optimize this content for the search engines. However, millions of sites cannot be number one for a single keyword or phrase. Page rank must decide the difference.

The problem, however, is that the top search engines have now leaned so far away from onsite optimization, in preference of offsite optimization (i.e. page rank), that you are likely to find all kinds of lousy content and add riddled sites at the top of your searches. Putting a greater importance on links, however, plays significantly in Google’s favour. This is especially true today, as reciprocal and 3-way link exchanges have now been significantly devalued, along with paid links and link directories.

Google’s intent is that links should be entirely organic, occurring naturally when other webmasters like your site enough to add a link to it. This way of achieving links however, can take a very, very long time, as most Internet users do not know that they are supposed to do this. Most Internet users add the sites they like to their favourites, they don’t create a keyword rich link to it from their own highly relevant site. Nevertheless, this is just one of the many ways Google favours older more time-proven sites over newer, get rich quick sites. The fact is, unless the content of your website has just revealed something of tremendous news importance, it could take years before your quality site acquires enough natural, keyword rich links from relevant sites to significantly boost you to the top of the search engines.

The conundrum, however, is that nobody will find your great content, and thereby link to it, unless you are on page one or two for at least one keyword or phrase (one that gets searched for that is). So if you do want to acquire natural one-way links, you pretty much have only one choice. You will have to advertise.

Google now provides the best online advertising available. Not only is it inexpensive, it is targeted towards your keywords.

This means a much higher conversion rate. People will find your product or service when they are looking for it, not when they are looking for something else. And with around 80% of North American searches done on Google, it just wouldn’t make sense to concentrate your efforts anywhere else (unless your loyalty lies elsewhere).

Knowing this, guess who will reap the largest rewards of this new lean towards offsite optimization? The reality is, if you want your internet site to one day make it to the top of Google (and Yahoo and MSN) for an important keyword or phrase, you will have to acquire a substantial number of natural links. Since this could take years, as most webmasters are selfish and don’t link for nothing, and most Internet users don’t know to do this, you are bound to spend a small fortune with Google before your site is able to stand on its own. Of course Google won’t make as much of a profit from you once your site is on the top, but there will be millions of others who will still be vying for this position.

The bottom line is, you will need to spend money if you one day want to make money.

The only question is how much money can you afford to invest? Or should I say gamble, because no matter how much money you spend, there are no guarantees.

The results, of course, are purely organic, and Google’s algorithm can change at any time. Besides, by the time you’re actually on the top, your content and unique features will likely be outdated and not that impressive anymore.

Google insists that you cannot purchase or pay for the organic results located on the left side of the screen. If you are caught purchasing links that are intended to indirectly improve your search engine ranking position, you will either be significantly penalized, or removed from Google entirely. However, the only significant way to increase naturally is to pay for advertising on the right side, so people can actually find your great content and unique features, and provide you with these natural links.

Of course, there are some other ways to promote your site, such as blogging, posting on forums, and creating videos on Youtube, etc. The catch is, however, that if you’re not careful, you will be penalized for spamming (excessively promoting your site where you are not supposed to). This is why most forums these days have the no follow meta tags added to their code. Otherwise, you will just have to get creative in achieving and maintaining high PR links that are relevant and keyword rich.

Unfortunately, if you do find a way to attain these links in any way that Google considers unnatural, it will eventually update its algorithm and ensure you are penalized for your imaginative endeavours.

Personally, I’ve never seen so many people work so hard at what is considered cheating. Couldn’t we at least give them part marks for creativity?
